Just thinking about making a new inlet pipe for my hybrid... the inlet is about 62mm If I use a 3" pipe and taper to @2.5" before the turbo would this be worse than just using a 2.5" pipe all the way??

It's a reasonable length, so yes, bigger is better, you can do the first bit with a samco reducer, then alloy pipe, then samco bend if you see what I mean.

david,
if your turbo plans are going to be influenced by me still, you might as well nto bother and get yourslef a section of four inch straight pipe directly to the air filter.

David,
You must be paranoid, suffering from perceived inlet size envy or something... maybe Freud might have written something that could help you!
I didn't, at any point, say that I had a turbo with an 80mm ID inlet.

I haven't tried it obviously (just bought an off the shelf inlet pipe at 55mm ID), but I would prefer your larger design tapering down. Pressure drops will be lower. It is quite like an intravenous cannula the flow you can get through it for a certain pressure DROP. This flow for a given pressure drop through your inlet is inversely proportional to the length and proportional to the fourth power of the radius. So in this case it will be proportional to the integral of all the fourth powers of the radii all along. So beneficial as long as it is all smooth? Just my theoretical 2p Tapers inside the compressor housing anyway Feel free to spill all the beans in an email about your hybrid Fat chance
