Anybody put methanol in the IC spray?
#3
Hi Nom,then why put it in the WI? I can only assume that methanol has a higher latent heat of vaporisation and hence absorbs more heat per gramme vaporised.Alternatively I could be talking cack which I often do!

Been using <10% methanol in WI to stop freezing.
Apparantly too much affects flame front (?)during combustion - or is this fluent billox ?
Wasn't there a big thread on this before Xmas ??

OK, no link, getting info from ye olde booke instead...
Water injection:
"The OH group precipitates corrosion of the piston ring lands, the piston rings & the bore wall by removing lubricant." That is, apparently, for anything much over the amount needed to stop the water from freezing. Which is preumably around 10%?
No mention about sticking it in water spray, though - and I'd have thought if it was beneficial, it would be mentioned! Good nozzles, that's what you want
Meths is good with roots type blowers. If you were thinking of adding one of those

Oo, Stan - just read your bit . Methanol burns more slowly than petrol, so is good for anti-det (and can presumably therefore increase power if you map to take the slower flame-front into account).
But too much promotes det.
And does other nasty things.
So, good in moderation, then.

would it not be far cheaper to simply run the supply water hose to the cooler spray jets around the air con cooler hose a few turns "en route" up to the bonnet jets, thereby cooling the water when it needs it most, as once the air temp lowers, you dont need it, as even then, you have switched the air con off anyway.
Call me logical, butwhy keep spending money on addatives when there are oppertunities on the car to gain supplies of anything you need.

You are talking about two different systems here, Water injection , i.e water being sprayed into the intake and so lowing charge temp and combating dettenation. And then an IC spray, which is external, again to lower intake temps but does not enter the engine in anyway.
Methanol has been seen to give good results when used with Water injection.

A good few years ago I built a turbocharged 1300cc BDA engine for my Sports Racer. It was set at 20 psi and was producing 265 BHP at 11500 RPM. It suffered from detonation initially-turbo's were very new in those days, so I set up a water/methanol WI system. This cured the detonation problem but the scrutineers threw it out as being outside the regs. I then used water/methanol sprayed onto the intercooler and the cooling was sufficient to stop the detonation successfully. As you rightly said, the latent heat of evaporation of the methanol is high and helped the cooling in either case.
Hope this helps
