Went to pull off my drive this morning and everything ok for a couple of yards then got this pretty loud squealing noise that was easily audible both inside and outside the car, am hoping it was a brake pad just and so touching a brake disc but it sounded really bad (metal on metal). Stopped and set off a few times and it didn`t stop, then reversed and it did it again, set off forward again and it stopped. The squealing was only there when the car was moving. Has anyone else had a noise like this? Am worried it might be something far more serious, like gearbox/transmission etc.

HELP! am driving to Birmingham tomorrow afternoon and am not looking forward to it at all

Cheers

Ab

I`ve been reliably informed by a bloke thats fast turning into my chief mechanic (Mark@WRX) that the above problem is caused by stones getting in among the backing plates round the brakes and causing the above noise, so if it happens to anyone else who hasn`t a clue like me and it then go`s away then this is probably the problem.

Cheers Mark

my mum's Audi A2 was prone to that, stones kept getting caught between the discs and the protecting plates behind them

can be a bit of a common occurrence with scooby brake discs, especially in damper/colder weather. the air condensates on the warm discs, giving them a liberal coating of rsurface rust, so first couple of brake applications needed to clear it off thats all.

Most likely a stone caught in the discs, rust noise goes after one stop. You may need to pry the shield back with a screwdriver if the stone doesn't come out on it's own. Be warned that reversing may only move the stone temporarily, so get on your hands and knees and check asap.
PS. I thought you were talking fanbelt squeal at first!

Question

Had a squelling noise from my Scooby that came and went it was the flywheel bearing told that this is quite common on Scoobys. Mine is an MY95 WRX. If this is the problem and you are fixing it yourself don't buy from a Subaru dealer match it up at your local bearing shop costs about a tenth of the price!!!!
