..I'm as technically minded as a sandwich, and I'm interested in upgrading the ECU.
What are the differences between AE800/AE801 etc etc are these OE units? I have a MY98 UK Turbo with the phase 2 engine, so what ECU do I have? How do I distinguish?
I am running full decat and getting 1bar solid, whats the easiest way to increase the power/boost via ECU change and the costs involved?
Cheers for helping someone less tech minded this Xmas

Richard, AFAIK the AE800 started on the MY99's, the ones with only 2 vents at the side of the front foglamps.
You say yours is a MY98, therefore i think you are in the pre TEK school.
I am not sure wether power engineering still do conversions for this MY, someone else will clarify what is available.
Perhaps one of the Scoobyecu would work, which is very good value for money IMO.
To check which ecu you have, peel back the carpet in the passenger footwell from under the glove box. Underneath this there will be a metal kick plate held on with thre nuts. undo these and underneath is the ecu. There will be a lable on here that will tell you what ECU it is. It will probably be the larger font.
Hope that helps

If your car is indeed an MY98 then your only option (if you want the keep the OEM ECU) is a PE Phase1 converison.
The ScoobyEcu offering is (currently) only for pre-MY97 cars and the Ecutek is for MY99-on.
Have a look at the ECU if it has '8S' in large letters and 3 yellow connectors then it is indeed an MY98.
