Anyone got any info on an E4 ecu?

Hi there,
Trying to get some info on an E4 ecu... Primarily manufacture year. The car is a 1990 Liberty but has had a conversion from a GX and I have no idea what the donor car was.
I am trying to install a chip, and presumed it would be the early 27c256 type, although the car will not start following installation.
I have verified the data on the chip is OK, but am using a different brand from usual. Are the subaru ecu's particularly sensitive to brand... (the speed is still 150 on the new chips).
Any ideas or a definitive list of ecu numbers would be greatly received!
BTW the car is also an auto... would this make any difference.
