Hi all,

Why has the Air Flow Meter got a mesh screen at both ends of the piping because to me this seems like an unecessary flow restriction, especially when you have paid for a high performance induction kit to reduce flow restrictions.

Is it OK to remove ?

Cheers

Brett

Hi Brett,

I ran without mine for about 6 months, as I had the same idea, didn't make any difference and no adverse effects. However, I'm sure it's there for a reason, be it a condensation trap, or to protect the MAF from cr@p, or even to straighten airflow (?), so I'd leave it in if I were you.

Cheers

Rich

From what i remember it does affect the air flow around the MAF, and i would certainly not remove it on my car. (although i dont need the MAF as i am running a LINK ecu).

By causing the air to flow differently around the MAF it could cause the MAF to read incorrectly and either cause the car to run rich or lean, which you dont really want.

IMHO don't remove it unless you are going to keep a spare MAF sensor in the glovebox and get it remapped.

Allot of the DSM guys remove the flow straightener screens to lean out their AFR. This leads to a rough idle and requires that you have some way of checking the AFR. I've never heard of it done on a Suby though.

I've talked to someone who tried this modification on their Scooby with unfortuneatly catastrophic results very soon after ;a holed piston. It's therefore something I'd not be prepared to risk on my car.

John

Thanks for the help guys.

Just thought it my be causing quite an air flow restriction, you spend the money for an induction kit and then you've got that mesh causing more of a restriction, but hey it could cause more problems than its worth removing it.

Cheers
