Reducing inlet manifold temps

The Dawes was a temporary fix to get the car running for Well Lane 3. Problem with it was that boost wouldn't hold, it went from 21-22psi in the midrange all the way back down to 16 at the top end.
Having said that, figures were reasonable considering.

Haven't made any more but wasn't too difficult, just a case of a 90 degree 63mm Samco hose and some 63mm straight pipe to hacksaw into "Terry's chocolate orange wedges" for the turbo inlet section.
The spacers for the header tank made a big difference to the manifold temp on that side compared to the other. I've got various thermocouples dotted round the engine bay monitoring temps but in this instance there was no need. You could easily feel the difference by hand.
LOL All i do is give the bay a quick wipe over, everytime i work on it....
<Resolution for next year....stuff working on it and just drive the bl88dy thing!!...>

Following on from recent threads about raising inlet manifolds, I thought some folks may be interested in what i've done to mine along with a change of inlet pipe.
Cost? £20 for the 90 degree Samco bend and £20 for 4 inlet manifold gaskets.
First pic showing under bonnet before starting....oh dear...bit busy under here...

Now in place...

Pity I couldn't get a straight run into it but i think it's not too bad.

Hi guys.
I'll go out and take a finished pic of under bonnet in a mo.
I'm using the normal K&N induction kit which is readily available as part of an induction kit.
I contacted K&N about the flow capability of the filter which was supplied with the intercooler and was rated to around 400bhp but was physically smaller than the one fitted just now. Thought it best to have as big as i could fit in the space available.
Been busy with the xmas rush Andy so haven't mapped it yet, but appears to be more eager at the top end which is where i lacked at Well Lane.
To those that don't know, my power stopped climbing at 5000rpm and stayed flat up until 7000, a bit like a torque curve instead of a power curve.
Still 340bhp is 120 over std. Just getting greedy, I want more!!
Didn't notice any improvement in spool up unfortunately which would have been nice.

Following your suggestion the hoses are there to try and keep the underbonnet clean Andy, or did you forget??

Carlos, I meant TD (mitsubishi) series, not TD supplied, which of course it is !
Uppipe worked for me but you'll have a better option shortly anyway

Some of you guys got an up-pipe from TimW. Did any of you feel any difference after it was fitted?

If you have a look at the radiator header tank as well, you can see the plastic spacers fitted between the tank and the manifold.
This was suggested by Andy cause after fitting, I noticed the manifold on that side was still a good bit warmer than the other due to heat transfer from the tank.
All luvverly jubberly now

Andy, i have one of the up pipes from Tim W, and when i was with Bob Rawle the week before Well Lane, he said he had mapped a car pretty much similar to mine, but without ported headers and uppipe IIRC.
His comment was that mine spooled up a whole lot quicker than the other.

Yes we did, basically the holes were not drilled at a true 90 degrees to the face of the plate. They lined up with the turbo etc, but when the studs were in, they were way off target.
David drilled the holes straight, then tack welded the studs to the plate. The tack weld snapped on tightening, so he welded the studs properly instead.

I too am still waiting for an MRT induction pipe from Scoobymania, so I can convert from the 90deg elbow. Am I right in saying Alan that you didnt actually convert from 90deg to straight entry, you just modified the original straight entry system???
Why is it, that when you are relying on others to supply good from OZ ( not scoobymania only here, as others have let me down before ) they take ages. I have ordered arious other items direct from Australia, and usually take a couple of weeks at the absolute most. When others order for me, they take over 2 months.
I made an up-pipe for my car, and have to say, didnt notice much difference, but there were other things done at the same time, so hard to say what did what.

My car's a '99 UK car which came with the TD04.
Comparing Andy's engine with mine, he has a better entry for his inlet pipe to his turbo after taking away the 90 degree bend which is mainly due to the shape of the manifold on his car.
On the phase II, where the inlet pipe comes out of the manifold to the turbo, it takes a quite, IMO, sharp left, right turn into the turbo.
The pipe which i made up lessens this to an extent, but i would have preffered to have had a direct path.
For info i used 63mm tubing. 75mm will go under but needs certain abutments ground away for clearance, plus the powersteering header will definitely need to be moved.
This is only a trial to see what gains i can get, bearing in mind the size of the pipework. It was done in the hope i can gain my lost power at the top end. If i feel the need to go bigger, i'll spend the time and effort making up pipework in 75mm and move the header tank out the way.
At the end of the day, I weighed up the cost/value of £220ish +vat for an MRT pipe as against £20 for the Samco hose and a bit of effort.

Regards ordering goods through distributors / dealers..
Sometimes there is a minimum order necessary before sending.
To use the MRT pipe as an example, the supplying company may have to give a minimum order of say 20 units before the manufacturer will ship out.
So, some places say things like , "yeah we expect them in, in about three weeks".
What they're really saying is "we've had x number of orders so far and expect to see x number of customers ordering by next week, so we'll order then and will get them the following week from the manufacturer"
Probably not the case with the likes of Scoobymania or MRT but i've seen this on several occasions with items not associated with car parts.

Not sure if this will matter on mine anyway since it is being moved in front of off side wheel arch where ignition amplifier and boost control solenoid used to sit.
