Question

Having made the decision to spend on an FMIC I wondered what opinions were on these 3 products (for a classic):

APS R series
HKS
Apexi GT

I cant find huge amounts of info about these (i.e comparison tests etc) so if anyone has experience or knows where to point me for info, then any opinions are welcome.

Thanks
Ben

I'm interested to know about the Apexi GT. But because my both my hotmail and ntlmail doesn't seem to be able to work, I can't contact Jamie about this.

I'd go for the HKS any day again - the APS is a proven item as well...haven't heard anything about the Apexi one.

I think the Apexi is a universal one. That should help keep the cost down. Perfect for my next project (after the gearbox rebuild).

Ben, as I mentioned in the PM, I'd go HKS or Blitz, they both have a good sized core with cast end cans and a hard pipe kit. Try Grasshopper ask for Jonny or Latz and tell them I pointed you in that direction

From Memory the Apexi has a slightly smaller core than these 2 and doesn't look so nice through the grill.

Personally, and this has been mentioned a few time I don't like the silcon hoses of the APS unit from a chaffing point of view. The core is nice though.

do not know about the others but I was impressed how strong the fins on the aps fmic are when I looked at john banks.

I have also found that wallace performance are doing them for under £900 which is the cheapest I have found.

PACE is also a good fmic. An added bonus is that you don't have to hak at your bumper to fit it.

interesting that I learned today that any mesh placed in front of the grill should be considered as being capable of reducing core exposure size by the area the mesh would occupy if you compressed it down to gapless mesh. If that makes sense.

in essence, just cos it lets holes air through the holes, it is still reducing the frontal size by its metal surface area!

quote surprised by that!

Tim,

I thought the metal pipes were not as good as rubber ones for keeping the charge temp down.

APS has multiple chafing problems, otherwise OK IMHO.

If you fit the APS carefully and correctly then it won't chafe ... had a problem with my back pipe from turbo chafing at the starter motor ... repositioned and its sorted. HKS is good as well, or Hyperflow.

Aye, and this has been proven at a rolling road (as I read sometime back) - still it's either mesh or risk damaging the fins on the 'cooler, how innefficient would it be then?

I too would like to find out more about the Apexi item as it claims to have a "delta fin" structure which aids cooling (inc surface area?) - have any tests been done for these cores (like the induction filtration test)?

Had the Hyperflow for a year now with no fitment or running problems that the APS seems to throw up.

Would buy the same again if circumstances dictated.

Talking

I have an active dislike of complete intercooler pipework in Silcon hose...but maybe that's just me...give me a hard pipe kit every time...the only placed where it could get hot on my set up I've put a heat reflective sleeve around, as these pics show:

Pics care of Steve Breen http://www.iwoc.co.uk

Anyway I have a new routing plan that I quite fancy trying, my only concearn is weather the HKS core is directional, anyone know? I want to change the flow direction

Are you boys running these FMICS with the standard turbos or uprated items?

I just have a standard turbo for now - will an FMIC increase turbo lag or is it not affected?

Also, there have been different opinions on metal or silicon pipework - does the metal get hotter therefore increasing the temp of the air on its way in?

Im currently getting an APexi GT spec fmic. Its not a huge intercooler BUT the core design is superb and the pressure drops are meant to be minimal.
When comparing intercoolers there isnt THAT much between them anyway.

Cheers

The intercooler core, is a little different to everything I have seen before ..... price should be ~ US$ 1K.

Not bad. Do you have to make your own pipings for it?
