VSS Speed Sensor....?

Anyone out there had a problem with the VSS, Vehicle Speed Sensor (code 33)??
When braking from speed on motorway (most times) i get a check engine light that remains and goes to limp home mode until i switch off - this then clears until the next time.
I guess i'm right in saying this monitors speed but how does it work and where is it....could this be causing the problem above?
