Since my STi swap is getting written off I may be sourcing a new engine. I had a V4. It definitely needs new valves etc. If the cheque is big enough I may want to purchase a different engine/tranny.

I like the low end punch that the VF24 gave me. Would like to be putting out about 350hp. In terms of mods and reliability is there a specific STi version favoured over another? I may have the chance to buy anything from a V.2 up to a V7.

Unquestionably the V7 gearbox but I wonder which engine I should use.

Sti 7 has a stronger block - so you can push more boost into if it the rest of the 'bits' are up to it. Are you going to rebuild the engine - especially the rods and pistons? If so - go for the 7.

Something that makes me nervous about the STi 7 is the valve timing thing. Seems like that motor can't be revved quite as hard as my version 4. Also, it's kind of complicated and I don't know if it's well sorted out yet.

I'm the sort of person who drives with the pedal to the floor like 50% of the time so I will want something strong and up to the task. After all it is an STi!

I`d go for a Version 5/6, the strongest of the classic scoob engines, without the valve timing hassle of the V7.

Hrm. Didn't know the V5 was any stronger than the V4. Any ideas or info on what was changed?
