Exhaust question - what comes after the downpipe?
#1
Hi,
I was talking to the dealer about fitting an after-market downpipe to my PPP'd MY01 (they are "mod-friendly"). He surprised me by saying that there is a section between the downpipe and the centre section that includes a silencer and that they prefer to replace and get better results from than the downpipe replacement.
I've not come across this before - can anyone shed any light?
Basically he's saying that replacing this with a straight-through section and fitting an ITG filter will be a good and fairly cheap upgrade.
Cheers,
Gareth

If you have a PPP'd MY01 that pipe has already been replaced. It is about 2' long. The original pipe had a CAT in it and a Sensor. The replacement PPP pipe still has the sensor but is just a bit of pipe no box or cat.
Picture of PPP Exhaust (note small section)
Shark in here has a PPP with Scoobysport Downpipe and got 276bhp I think on the rollers.

OEM bugeye exhaust goes cylinder head - manifold (AKA headers), up-pipe (with cat), turbo, down-pipe (with cat), front centre (with cat), rear centre (with small silencer), rear section (with main silencer tail pipe)
Too many cats in there for my liking . Be careful with the prodrive ECU and downpipe change, as IIRC at least one person who put a downpipe on a PPP'd car discovered the engine was right on the limit of timing retardation to avoid det. The way he solved this? Decat the up-pipe - more power, less timing retardation, everyone's a winner.
Speak to Pete Croney at scoobysport, as IIRC the car in question was in there and they'll know a lot more about it than I do.

So now I understand that the MY01 WRX PPP replaces the front centre (with cat) and backbox, but not the rear centre (with silencer).
My dealer is offering me a replacement ***rear*** centre which is a straight-through pipe without the silencer.

I think I'm going to go for it - been quoted £170 fitted inc VAT for the pipe and an ITG filter. I'm a bit worried about the in-car noise level though - mine's a wagon - but have been promised I can give it back if it's too loud.
