Help! Dead Scooby!
#1
My scooby has just decided to die on me. I was driving along (about 1/2 mile from home), went over a very small bump in the road, and... no engine. Coasted into a side road and tried to start it - engine turns over, but no life.
Chap from little local garage who towed me back said it might possibly be a fuel cut off (supposed to go in an accident). Has it got one and if so where? (94 WRX 5 door)?
I know it isn't alarm as that stops starter working.
Any other ideas?
Thanks in advance
Neil.

OK now for the dumb question... Where is the fuel pump relay?
Had a look outside in the dark, and it doesn't seem to be in the fuse/relay box in the engine.
Any other ideas?
Neil.

Fuel pump relay is plugged into a green connector around the steering column, up under the dashboard somewhere I seem to remember. There is no 'fuel cut off' switch as such though.

NeilA: If the car has been modded, check for a loose ECU daughter board (if appropriate).
Mine did exactly what you described, turned out to be a dry joint.
Try tapping the ECU box (you don't have to remove the carpet etc), just vibrate it a bit and see if it makes contact again.
Just my 2c worth.
If it is this, it can be a bugger to find unless someone tips you off in the right direction.

mine did exactly the same thing. in the fuse box under the bonnet (right hand side above batt) there are several tall green fuses that dont appear in any other car, typically. thaye have a small window on the top so that you can check the filament, but since the glass is dimpled it is often difficult to see if they are gone or not. check this carefully, theres three in a row and it was the one that was clsoest to the batt on mine that caused it.(if it makes you feel any better, mine went at 3 am in the **** end of no-where and when the rac man came he surmised the cam belt had gone. you cant imagine how happy that made me). also, the way to check if relays work or not is to smell them (sounds a bit jamie oliver i know but trust me) if they smell a bit, well pooey really, chances are theyre gone. if they have no smell theyre in tact. try these fuses first though, cos it sounds uncannily familiar to me.
hope it helps, apologies if i got your hopes up for nothing.
Matt.

If that doesn't work You might want to check the AFM as that sounds supiciously like the symptoms of a dead one. Although it doesn't usually go after going over a bump ? easily checked though
If you disconnect the AFM itself and try starting the beast and it does then that is the culprit. might want to have a look at what codes (if any) the ecu is spitting out

Thanks for those ideas!
The car is now at home on a trailer, waiting to get taken in to garage at weekend. Will have a go at those ideas first before I go!
And according to them it does not have a fuel cut off, so no wonder I couldn't find one!
It strikes me it is either going to be very simple (wire come off or fuse blown type of thing) or very expensive (ECU?) Hope for the former, expect the latter!!

On mine it was a loose connector in the fuel pump wiring. Once the rear seat was lifted the connector block was visible, wiggling it made the connection again and everything sprang into life.
