Sound's like you will be needing a new piston seen it before, with symptons like your's.
If its only a headgasket/turbo I'll be v.surprised !!
Good LUCK.

This is one of the good reasons of keeping the limiters in place on the Jap imports. Running at high revs for long periods destroys engines. My RA has low gearing and the oil tempertures rise significantly when crusing at autobahn speed. I can get in excess of 100C at 4000-4500rpm (not particularly high mph in an RA either) I dread to think what temp the oil would be at 145mph and 7,500 rpm. These cars are not high speed motorway cruisers. Sorry to say it and I hope aint right but it sounds like the engine has let go .

You could be lucky and find it's just the turbo - here's hoping !
Were there any signs of oil escaping from the engine when you parked up ?

Adam, it may run even if the piston and/or conrod has gone, my STI5 blew the turbo, partially melted a piston, snapped a conrod by the bolt area, partially siezed a 2nd conrod, cracked both heads, and took chunks out of the bore, block and sump - but still started and ticked over (albiet a bit lumpily !).

Chris.

Red face

On the limiter?! thats like 175mph in a P1
Sounds like it could be your turbo, could also be your head gasket if the engine temps got too high and it warped but that would take some doing, 145mph was a bit silly on a motorway though (over twice the limit) so i take it you meant the autobahn?

Head Gasket would deffo provide a plume of white smoke from the engine dept!

Question

jasetheace,

Were you in one of the P1's that was cruising back and forth past the Odyssey Arena after the 4Play show back in Sep?

Sounds to me like a dead turbo my freind. Apart from the speed you where doing, the same thing happened to me in my R5GTTurbo years back. Whent to overtake a Sunday plodder and all of a sudden no power and loads of white smoke out the back. Doh.

Needless to say this was confirmed as a dead turbo and £575 later thanks to Turbo Technics of Aldershot, the tin can was back to its turbo-tastic self once more.

Had the same thing happen twice. Once in a silvia and once in a 200sx. Both times it was a gubbed turbo. Did you notice a nasty rattle from the turbo side of the engine bay after it blew? Sure sign of a knackered turbo.

Place your bets here, is it a turbo, piston or head gasket...? I do feel for you though, I wouldn't be able to sleep the night before diagnosis

Regards

Kev..

Jasetheace,

Bad luck! From your description, I guess we're talking at least a Head gasket and/or a piston(s). If you want a continuous very high speed motorway cruiser,(better make that Autobahn ...) the Subaru is not the first choice ... its ideal habitat is elsewhere ... highly stressed turbo charged smaller capacity engines at continuous full bore? Nah ...... there really is no substitute for lightly stressed bigger inches (were still talking cubic capacity here ... horses for courses and all that.

Be very interested to know the extent of the damage news ... Good Luck anyway ... I think you'll be needing some ...

Sounds exactly like what happened to my 1st scoob, similar speeds and then OMG plumes of WHITE smoke. Was not the turbo, piston no 3 had gone, shafted the engine completely, also dumped some bits in the exhaust which then knackered the turbo.

Parked up waiting for transporter and there was oil just pouring from the undertray of the car

I will go with piston!

That sort of speed - if it was held for any time - detonation induced pre-ignition would be my guess. I bet there's a nice big hole in the middle of one of the pistons

if the turbo died, the engine would still be able to run, assuming it didnt somehow block the exhaust completely.

Did you engine stall immediately?

does it tick over now?

if it does tickover now does it make a rattley sound?

i was not holding it at that speed..i was still accelerating and then it was smoking.....then i stopped...it did stall but it did start again..and when it did it was vibrating alot...the whole car was shaking....subaru have told me now they cant look at it until next friday......so there it sits.....good news is they said it was a warranty job if something in the engine has let go...(Piston, turbo, head etc.)so there is light and the end of the tunnel..thank subaru for extended warranty for £190 for 3 years...best think i ever bought.....

If i was you mate i would take the pipe of the front of the comp housing on the turbo and have a feel of the bearings, see if there is any oil in the intake pipe. I think part of the prob with top
mount intercoolers is when you start to get a move on due to the aero dinamics a good percentage of the air travels above the intake
scoop and the charge temps get high and you get det.
Steve.

if its was shaking violently when stood then to me it has let go internally, and it is not just the turbo.IMHO

The only time I have blown a turbo was the morning after a flat out trial down an autobahn

No smoke out the back, definitely no boost and when I shut the engine off I could hear the turbo spinning down for a couple of seconds after the engine had stopped...

Andy
ps. Grown up since then, at least when i'm not on a track !!

A few simple checks you can do, if youve deted a piston you can expect to see 1 of two things on the spark plug most prob both of them.
1. Specs of deted alloy on the the plug.
2. Oil on the plug that has found its way past the piston through
the hole/ deted ring land, crown.
If you run the engine and take the crank case breather of on the block, right hand side of turbo it will be breathing heavily due to the cyl compression escaping past the piston into the crank case.
Beleive it or not it is pos to bend a rod through det as it has
a hammering effect on the rod, it is not common but worth checking. Even 3-4 thou can have an effect that will put so much side load on the pin that it can push the cir-clip out and cause megga damage along with rapid bore/ ring land wear.
Steve.
