Got my car back, crunching gearbox!!

Hi all
Got my car back just now after it's been away a week & a half having new uprated clutch, lightened flywheel and plate diff changed to standard.
My problem is when I put the car into reverse it crunches now quite badly unless your really gentle, it didn't do this before
All I can think is when the guy changed the front diff he put different gear oil in the box, it did have Castrol Syntrax in and it was fine.
Does this sound feasable that the gear oil makes this much difference??
It also seems when changing from 3rd to 4th to 'spring' out with a light action applied!
Litterally just got home so thought I'd ask you guys, so I can sleep easier I'll ring em and see 2moro.
Oh yeh, the lightened flywheel is noticable, seems to spin the revs up quicker

which diff did you change and why?? did they change your (front??)diff or the whole box??

May be a poor build but the wrong oil will def make things bad. Get Syntrax into it, and if that fails, then the garage has some explaining to do.

Changed the front diff only, it's the same box.
I had it changed to a standard one coz it had a Kaaz plate diff in which was annoying me by clattering and grabbing, I have to go through a lot of housing estate roads (stopping starting, turning) on my journey to and from work.
I was having a new clutch n flywheel done so I thought i'd get it changed to standard as I have the standard one.
The plate diff could have been adjusted to less lock but nobody seemed up for it.
Don't know if it could of affected the gearbox in this way just changing the diff?
But before it was ok now its crunching, so I just wondered if oil could make this much difference?

sounds like someone f***ed up when they delved into your box??!!
or they put a naff one in its place and kept the good box!!!
dont think oil alone is enough to make the diff. you describe in the timescale

Alyn, you lost me mate?!
I have the Kaaz diff from the gearbox that they took out, don't know how involved it is to remove but presume once they'd taken it out it wouldn't take mucch longer to put the standard one I gave them in?

And Fuzz, yes the diff is for sale, got the box and instructions how to re-order the plates for various lock levels from Ray Kaaz (in USA). To be honest I'd have rather kept it in but just had it at less lock.

IMO i would definately have a look at the oil-i had very similar probs with my g/box,put syntrax in it and all was cured(even stopped crunching when changing down into 4th at 80/90mph),i never reallised that oil could make such a difference to a gearbox,lets face it,alot of garages wont have syntrax(or similar) on the shelf, and will probably put "normal" oil in.I'd phone them and explain,ya never know -they might change it for you.

what i was getting at was simply that if the car drove fine before (and now doesn't!!) then there is an obvious problem........

I would definately go back and ask them to change the oil for something better and see if this cures it before slagging off their workmanship. Having said that, my MY93 has a comp clutch in it and reverse crunches all the time (I also get the 4th gear crunch too) so I'll be changing my gb oil and see if it helps at all.

It most probably is the workmanship, but good oil ( Syntrax ) can hide, or totally remove any crunching etc in a less than perfect box. If this was the case, and crap oil was put in, then the crunching etc would re-appear, but not necessarily something the mechainic did.
Oil really can make a difference, but I would be asking the garage what oil they used, and why first.

Thanks for the replys everyone
It's a bit tricky coz the garage I left the car with didn't do the diff, they sent the box out to be done.
Rang the garage today, the guy there told me that it would have been filled up with lesser quality oil than the syntrax.
I'm gonna change it to syntrax, if I can get hold of enough of it!.
Am I right in thinking from memory it holds 4 litres?
I've only seen it in 1 litre bottles, is there anywhere that does it in 4 litres any cheaper than £10 a litre?
I also read you fill it from the dipstick hole, how the frick'n'eck d'ya do that?

Ive only seen syntrax in 1L bottles-at Halfords.I filled the box through the dipstick hole with a long bendy tubed funnel with a fairly thin end of the tube(one of the cheap black ones that you can get at most motor factors) i think you can also get these at Halfords.No spillages,worked a treat.Hope this helps.

Cheers easyrider, thought i'd seen that someone filled it through the dipstick hole!. Yeah I looked in Halfords earlier and only 1 litre bottles, I'll have a look for a 'long bendy tubed funnel'
