Just had our 97 Sport serviced and been told the crank oil seal is leaking. My wife said she was told the part is cheap but it's around 4 hours labour.

Waiting for a call from the dealer in Sheffield to give me a price.

I guess this has been asked before but I can't search for some reason. Is there anywhere that could do a cheaper/better job than a dealer? We're in South Yorkshire

Cheers

Neil

Thumbs up

The cost is in taking the pulleys, Timing belt cover, timing belt Etc. There is also a possibility that oil may have contaminated the timing belt & that may need replacing also ! If the timing belt is getting due I would change it at the same time as the seal to cut down on labour costs later on. Most reputable garages will be upto the job, Just shop around for a labour rate.

I had my one replaced by a mate who is a mechanic with Aird motors (local Sub dealer),it took him 2 hours and that was replacing the timing belt at the same time. Cost me £90 for the belt, you can get a cheaper one but it's really false economy, and it would prey on your mind forever.

is it the front seal though, or the rear one?

if its the rear, either the g'box needs to be dropped out, or the engine removed.

Oh bloody hell, don't tell me that

I think it is the front one. I rang the dealer and he mentioned pulleys and timing belts. Still waiting for a price though.

He mentioned it was quite a bad leak and wondered why it hadn't been noticed before. It's the first time we've had the car serviced at Sheffield, usually we go to York.

Unhappy

£11.25 for the seal, £220 for labour, plus VAT gives me £271.72

If I need a new timing belt that will cost another £98 + VAT

Bugger

Just paid for a service as well. Shame I didn't know about this before, maybe could've saved myself some money getting it all done in one go.

I wonder if it would pass as an Xmas present for the Missus...
