Just been told by the garage that I need to get the above part replaced.

The garage is going to call me with a price. But, I would like to get my own price - just to compare, you understand. Anyone know where are can get a price for this part?

Model is a STi Ver 4.

Cheers, Mark.

Cheers Col,

When the garage comes back with the all in price, I'd like to compare sourcing the part myself and finding someone who can fit it?

If I go this DIY route then the part sourced can be new or secondhand. What's the history on your second hand part + how much?

regards, mark.

okay - price from the garage I normally use is £395 + VAT + 1 hour to fit.

Does this seem fair?

Also, the part will need to come form Japan. Anyone know if I can source the part 'locally' and fit cheaper.

regards, Mark.

Why not get one second hand????? It would be a fraction of the price.
And why does the whole shaft need replaced?? What is actually wrong??

It all started with a knocking noise coming from the rear of the car (only when fully loaded with passengers). Garage suspected it was the nsr driveshaft (c/v joint). They were not sure.

Time passed, the car has just had another service and they now said that they can confirm that the nsr driveshaft needs replacing.

Hence my post...

I replaced the front drivers side shaft in about 15mins, didnt even take the wheel off. The 2nd hand one cost £50 and was in mint condition with no play what so ever and the CV Boots were like new. This wasnt a golden egg of a find and im not a qualified mechanic so save yourself the stinging. Hope this helps

Only thing that may be tricky, is if the car has a plate type LSD fitted. Then shafts may be harder to get.
If the rear diff is the normal VC unit, then any impreza shaft will do, be it UK or Jap spec.
If that is the price of a new one, then no way would I be buying one. There must be loads of second hand ones about.

New shaft sounds like a complete ripp off. more so, when it may just be an inner or outer joint , with the shaft being OK.
Just buy a second hand one. Ive rarely heard of them giving problems.
