Question

I've noticed lately that im getting quite a bit more 'whine' from the gearbox and just thinking ahead if it does eventually need some work. I've looked at the breakers and it would seem that im looking at about £450 plus vat (£530) exchange (for a WRX gearbox (MY92-96). Is rebuilding an option tho? Im not really looking at anything 'uprated'.... the car will see 300bhp max, torque maybe 280lb/ft. So how may hours to rebuild and what cost of the parts (bearings etc). At my garage's labour rate i could get 20 hrs labour for the cost of the second hand gearbox plus the cost of parts?

Anybody done this? What needed replacing etc?

Cheers,

Tony.

Wink

John Felstead has just had his gearbox done (not a complete rebuild though) so you may be able to get some info off him and where he got it done too

Had a My96UK box overhauled by GGR - cost about £800 all in .... they quoted £250 by phone for the rebuild + parts at cost ... when I picked it up they charged 7.5 hours labour ( £350) so that bumped the bill up a bit ... replaced a couple of synchros + bearings + seals + lock nuts ... box has run in fine - slight whine from 3rd & 5th but nice and smooth ... but not cheap ... apparently Power Engineering use GGR ... so they know what they are doing and also know how to charge ... get a written quote and you may save yourself some money ...

I can arrange to have boxes rebuilt for instance strip and replace syncros and rebuild parts and labour £250 no Vat and then to remove and replace the box £150. This is normally done in two days.
