Although the clutch pedal height should not change much due to wear as it is hydraulic and self adjusting, the clutch can smell when it gets some stick from new (as well as used), the smell is the friction material on the clutch plate burning.
This burning smell is caused by the clutch not being fully engaged and the clutch plate slipping against the flywheel/pressure plate.
When you disengage the clutch to pull away at low RPM there is a little bit of slip until you fully release the clutch and move, if you imagine this as normal.. now increase the RPM to 4000rpm and try to imagine that little bit of heat build up is now increased highly by the extra engine speed...
Another way of explaining is.... the clutch plate is made of the same kind of material as a set of brake pads, the pressure plate/flywheel is the same as the brake discs... if you stop from low speed there is not as much heat build up as slowing from high speed as the discs are not turning as fast..
If you do a lot of heavy braking in a small ammount of time your brakes will smell the same....
Unless you have got 6pots
Not sure if that is understandable.. just woke up

I've noticed that my clutch pedal sits quite a bit lower than my brake pedal... is this normal for scoobs or is it a sign that the self adjustment has reached it's limit?
cheers,
