Question

JB, would you please give your opinions on the TD04 Hybrid that you used for a (short) while.

I have been talking (mailing) with Mark Aigin re an upgrade....basically I cant go to a VF22 Hybrid at the moment, he has offered me a TD04 H for a reasonable sum

Any thoughts ?

Also what sort of boost and what sort of power figures would you expect to see?

It is a very good improvement on standard, but it doesn't push quite like a VF or a TD05, but then it is a heck of a lot better as a daily driver IMHO.

Stephen Done has my previous one on his car now and it goes quite well 311 BHP and 308 lbft at the recent dyno day I gather, but he has done *everything* else (except FMIC) to his car to help it along.

Hoppy is the other chap with one

On Hoppy's and my car when the boost was pushed over 1.3 bar we did suffer from det. Stick below that and it is quite happy. A robust little unit, that should be able to be rebuild too.

I really dont know what to do !!!

I dont want to do the 'job' twice, but then I can always sell the TD04 hybrid when I'm ready to up upgrade

If on the other hand you went for a VF28 or VF23, you could always get it hybridized later... this would give more performance, but more lag and later boost threshold.

Oh dear...more options

I dont want to push the boost threshold too far up the line, I like the early boost and the 'dollop' of torque in the middle with the PPP, I could live with boost coming on from 3k, but not 4k and above.

I suppose its all about compromise...I'll have to do some research into their characteristics.

The other thing is that I would be keeping my current ECU/EVC set-up, so I dont suppose a 'full' VF would be a good idea...re-map etc.

Anyway, no rush (yeah right!)

Anyone else with some sensible input on turbos for uk (standard internals) using fmic and an electronic boost controller???

My suggestion: Run a VF28 at 18 PSI (should reach 1 bar or 14.5 PSI at 3000 RPM in top gear with your EVC). If your knocklink lights up switch to an AE801 ECU with a fuel cut defender as the timing is slightly more retarded, or turn the boost down. When funds allow turn it into a mad hybrid and go for a remap.

**** the boost threshold and lag and use the gearbox and rev the nuts off it, IMHO It's more like hang on fairground ride fun

John ! You Hooligan !

MD for what it's worth, I was in JB's car with the TD04 hybrid and I thought it was excellent As a daily driver on UK gearing it gave an ideal torque spread. It also seemed quite happy to pull past 6000, something the standard one would not.

If you bought one of these now, then in the event that you felt the urge to go faster later then you could always sell it at a good price anyway. Only takes an hour to change once you get good at it

Another reason to not get too hung up about the boost threshold - remember that as the unit gets larger, so the exhaust pressure reduces when not on boost (bigger, umm, whatever it's called at the exhaust side - turbine? & the exhaust housing too...) - anyway, the car drives much better off-boost than it can with a small turbo. So the car isn't the pig (relatively!) it is with the TD04. IMHO
There's less of the punch low-down, but that isn't exactly difficult to adjust to, especially with the good stuff higher up being much better

I would go for the hybrid now if the price is right, it's resale value will be good when you're ready to go further.

Moles,

I'm getting a VF28 unit fitted to my car next Friday.
MY00 with everything bar a FMIC (but with an uprated TMIC)
Dr Banks will be tweaking the ECU one last time once it's fitted.
I'll let you know the results, as I might stick it on the rollers once the job's been done and post the results up here.

John, If I wanted to get my TD04 hybridised would I still be able to keep your Tek2.5 map or would it need a new one ?

Yes it would work fine. However, you would get more performance out of it by fitting a Dawes and running it at 18 PSI - however, make sure you get a knocklink if you do this.

WOW !!!

I wish I had internet access during the day

Thankyou all who had input, I think I will go for the TD04 hybrid...I am p1ssed with playing HIDs now so after smashing my headlights I will 're-group' funds ready for playing with turbos

And yes, I do use the car as a 'daily drive' so I have to consider the 'drivability' of whatever I do.

Me thinks I will get someone to fit it...dont fancy being on the drive on a Sunday afternoon with a stripped thread or leaking seal

Just need to explain to Mrs. Mole that my turbo has 'worn out' you know, like brake pads need to replace it now

AndyF, lol....seriously though, the intake temps only really rise when strangling the poor little TD04

I get intake temps of +10 over ambient when 'gunning', if I use all the power and all the revs (1.3 and 6k), it can rise to +30deg, (total, not over amb), the worst was +35.8deg when on the dyno

Looks like the TD04 hybrid *is* on the cards

I would gently steer you to something a little bigger I did get 1 bar at 2800 RPM out of my VF hybrid this morning, not too bad really. No surging.

MD, sorry I'm late to find this thread.

As mentioned, I have a TD04L hybrid - £500 exchange unit from Mark R19KET with a Tek3 remap. Bargain. It's the best thing I've done to the motor since the PPP. As far as I can tell, it drives just like the standard turbo with no more lag and I still get 1bar of boost at only 2,600rpm. It just blows harder and longer I drive the car everyday and get 1.3 to 1.4 bar, depending on the weather.

I've now got a big TMIC from John B and his old ScoobySport manifold and the car just flies. I guess my car is now similar to Steven Done's. With the manifold and another tweak to the map, it races past 6,000rpm when before it really didn't want to go much further.

John also fitted a Dawes to control boost, used in conjunction with the KnockLink. Right now I have no det at all but if I do in cold weather, then turn the Dawes down. And on track days, turn it right down for safety (or turn it up and pray!).

Get the hybrid. I'd also recommend a KnockLink and Tek3 to keep it sweet and safe.

JB, Hoppy et all

I can (just) afford the TD04 hybrid, but I'm not sure about a bigger unit.
With a VF for example, I (presume) I will need to go to TEK 3 or similar...I cannot do this at present.
I can use my existing PPP ecu with the HKS EVC and utilise the FMIC if I go TD04 hybrid, but to go BIGGER involves £ from the off.

I would like to just do the whole thing now but I cant!

I hope that makes sense?

VF 23 or 29 can be had for about £500 too. You could use an AE801, fuel cut defender, EVC and knocklink. If you sold the PPP ECU it would pay part towards your turbo. I say the AE801 because I think the fuelling and timing would be better suited to a big turbo run with a flatter boost curve. The AE801 is leaner on its last column (but still very sensible) than the PPP. The timing is safer. The PPP advances a heck of a lot at the top end, and the load zones hit with a big turbo seem a little inappropriate for detonation control at high revs.
