best way to check a leaky intercooler

Is there an easy way to check if an intercooler has been holed.
I was just going to take it off the car, flush it out with some petrol, then fill it with water and see if it leaks. Any easier ways?
If it does leak it there an good way to patch/repair it or will i be looking at a new cooler?
