I had one - in fact, had two. Just fancied some satisfaction of making my own and assimilating more knowledge

I know there was a thread about DIY Dawes type manual boost controller but can't find it.
Anyway, I believe some people are/were using RS part number 398-9142. This part only has a stated operating temperature range of of upto 80 celcius (uses polyurethane seal). Surely this is inadequate but what alternatives are there?
In some online instructions for building a ball-spring device they say that the ball and spring must be reversed - why is this? Also, the Dawes has a bleed hole to prevent spiking but I don't quite understand how this functions.
Can anyone with more experience educate me? Thanks.
