Boring old question i know but can a closed block be signified by mesh type casting marks on the under surface by the side of the sump? thanks.

As far as I know yes, certainly from the pictures of non-closed deck blocks I have seen, none have the mesh pattern, which you can also see just ahead of the gearbox on the top of the block.

Aren't you a tad bit scared of melting your piston. I had a long lecture in the past by john banks about my boost. I think I'll try to raise the boost up later.

Oh boy this is gonna be fun. Just remember that the weakest link for the Impreza is not the engine but the gearbox. If you haven't broken a gearbox then you just ain't trying hard enough. Group buy on a quaife gearbox anyone?

He will sell you an unbreakable gear set... and I promise you, you will not be able to break it with your engine...
And its reasonably priced..

Adam M,
When you say : "I will be running 40psi! ", I assume that's a rather lame 40psi(2.8bar) _absolute_ rather than a more impressive 40psi over and above atmospheric? In these _absolute_ terms, there were very few turbo scoobies running less than 26psi or 1.8bar boost (~0.8bar/12psi in traditional terms).
