Why does my steering squeal on full lock when cold?
#1
As the title says, I get a squeal like the sound of a knackered alenator belt but only on full lock when the car has just been started. I am a bit dim mechanically - I presume there is a power steering belt that needs tightening or replacing?
Could the problem be connected to a rough sound when the car is cold - not engine noise but appears to be an ancillary component rattling?

Check the belt to the power steering pump and the condition and tightness of the pully. On full lock the pump works harder and so the belt has to do more work, slipping and squealing if not tight.

Your right, I just had a look at what happens to the belt and it does indeed slip on full lock.
The reason is that part of an adjuster fixed to the power steeting pump is missing - I think it must have been loosened at the recent service (main dealer) and fallen off because they forgot to tighten it back up!
Couldn't prove it though, so I've got to pay £3 for the part
