Hi all,
The car (MY93 wrx) has been poorly for sometime now, (about 2 months) and thus I have driven it about 2 times.
So dearly want to drive it again, but need to get it fixed so i son't do any damage.
I have a feeling I know what the problem is but I'll run through the symptoms so you can make your mind up.
Starting the car from cold (Car is kept in garage), starts first time and idles as it should, if I leave it on the drive to idle for a while as soon as it starts to get warm and the revs drop back to normal, the revs start to search, and it gets so low that it sounds like it wants to cut out (but doesn't). Then when I try and pull away it wants none of it, I have to give it rather a lot of revs, say over 3000rpm to get it moving, otherwise it feels like it's missing.
However if I start the car from cold and drive it straight away it's fine and lets me drive off with no problems.
When I am driving about, there is a frequent hesitation, when say I pull away from stationary positions, or if I change up gear from low speed or if I'm at speed and I let off the accelerator, and then back on again it hesitates. It clears when I put my foot down further than I would normally. From then it drives like it should with no problems until the next time.
After carefull searching on hear and on IWOC it seems like the Lambda Sensor has given up the ghost.
Am I correct?
If not what do you think the problem is?
If it is the Lambda Sensor, will a UK sensor fit?
What's all this talk about the Halfords 02 sensor, should I bother?
Does anybody know how much these are new (OEM)?
Is the Lambda sensor on the MY93 wrx in the headers or Downpipe?
Anybody know the best place to purchase one from?
Thanks to you all in advance, I really need to get out in it. As I have been driving around in my Renault 5 1100cc for far too long now.
Need to get down some country roads.

Sounds like an ECU interrogation for fault codes. It can be done yourself (look at previous links) but if electrics are mans majic to you then take it to someone with diagnostics kit.

Chiark, this was one that I had considered along with a throttle position sensor and the lambda sensor.
Still non the wiser though.
Will take it out for another drive this afternoon to see if I can get some better symptoms.

Not sure on the scoob yet, but as the above mentioned the idler control valve which I think sits on the right hand side of the inlet Manifold, used to produce symptoms like this on the other cars ive had. I took the offending unit off sprayed with carb cleaner and watched all the **** of the day pour out. Worth a try maybe.

the lambda sensor went on my WRX but the symptoms were different. it was hesitant, felt like it was missing sometimes and I noticed it seemed to miss a beat on the gearchange. the idle was a bit lumpy sometimes but no problems with starting or driving off. didn't show up on a diagnostic first time but when it went in a couple of weeks later to be replaced it did.

Cheers for the replies.
Haven't had chance yet to take it out for a drive and a closer inspection.
Will do tommorrow and will report back.

Turn the engine on and unplug your maf sensor. if it idles no differently then its probably you maf sensor. Given the age it could be.
Could be the idle control solenoid or possibly coil packs?
