I hear a lot of you guys using 15w 50 motul and Mobil 1 and even Castrol 10w 60. Is that year round or do you change oil during the winter months to a 5W 50 or less?

Wink

Our climate is fairly mild so we can run 15w50 and 10w60 rated oils all year round
Now if we had -30 plus below id change it to something thinner but we may only get 4 or 5 days where it will even break -10 and that wont be all over the country, only in certain parts and normally rural (unless you live in scotland and you get -27 )

Not got any data for Motul or Castrol but both Mobil 1 0W-40 and 15W-50 are quoted as having pour points below -54C.

It is the impurities such as wax which cause conventional oil to thicken so much at low temperatures. A synthetic oil should not contain wax so will continue to flow at much lower temperatures. Those who use a semi-synthetic oil still have these impurities present and this is what compromises performance at both ends of the temperature scale.
