96 WRX rattle at 2000 revs

Hi Folks,
A friend of mine has an 1996 WRX which gives an annoying rattle going past 2000 revs. He originally thought this was the infamous heatshield problem so took the lot apart at the weekend, tightened everything and packed some of it out with exhaust tape
( excuse the non-technical explanation ).
The noise still persists since doing this so has anyone got any other suggestions on what the problem could be?
