Hi Neil,
Oil, I'd stick with the recommended stuff if I were you. A lot of dealers use Shell Helix Plus (I got a card with my P1 saying this is what Subaru UK recommend).
Spark plugs, you could try Iridium rather than the Platinum ones?
Let me know how you get on
cheers,
TTM

Castrol RS 10/60 or Silkolene.
The dealers also recommend P zeros/RE10's etc as the best tyres, when they're not. Something to do with the deal that Subaru/IM whatever cut with the manufacturers, nothing to do with which is actually the best tyre. Don't believe all you're told.
For instance I was told that putting stainless braided brake hoses on my car when I had the Alcon upgrade was wrong as if they were really better then subaru would fit them from the start. Oh right and all the Formula 1 teams/ WRC teams don't know what they are doing then. Mass produced cars are built to a budget, not to an ideal. Don't believe what spotty geeks in dealers or the handbook tells you blindly.
Don't know which plugs are best but I'm sure someone will tell you.
