Luckily I have access to a full workshop, and I used an air tool that is used for cutting in sunroofs to cut it, went through the metal like a hot knife through butter!

Cool

Ian, you big show off That looks far too neat and tidy

Well, I'm not as professional as Ian so I used a pair of heavy duty tinsnips.

Nice job of sculpting the shield. I have to say that I found re fitting this thing to be a complete pain. The worst bolt by far to replace is the one closest to the inner wing on the offside, actually on the turbo itself. Have fun!!

Easiest way for access is to take the TMIC off, and also remove the airbox/induction you have fitted, together with the maf housing.

Once you have done this you have complete access to al the bolts. Agree that the ones nearest the inner wing are hardest but if you spray the nut and the thread on the turb with wd40 before, you can get them the majority of the way in, then just use a spanner to tighten, the others are fairly easy.

Should take you no more than 20/30 mins if it is your 1st time, i have now got it down to about 5 mins to refit the heatshield.

Goodluck.

If you're only re-fitting the top part of the heatshield (the bit in the pic), then all you need to do is undo the two top bolts on the Turbo, then attach the heatshield bracket to them.

You can then mount the heatshield to the bracket.

The worst part is getting the Turbo bolts undone. I've already bent the teeth on my cheapo spanners trying it. If you use a BIG spanner, then they should come off.

Sorry did not realise you had to put the bracket back on, silly me.

Use a good socket set and a good spanner. Good luck!

That must be a later MY heatshield
the earlier MY ones (with the duct from the scoop area) have bolts that are much harder to get at
(incl 2 way down and close to the inside wing, and another way down near the steering column [although I can't remember exactly])

Stephen
Contemplating taking it off sometime to check on my wastegate actuator etc

it is from one with the straight tmic, not the offset one. they still have two down near the inner wing, and one near the steering column, but that should have gone after the cutting took place.

IIRC
