gear ratios
#1
Anyone know the gear ratios a WRX (not bug eye), and WRX wagon uses. Thinking of changing the box and diff on my 98MY 2000turbo and want something a little lower than std UK ratios.
Thanks

UK cars have 3.9:1 diffs. This is achieved generally by a 3.9 front diff and a 3.545 rear diff with a dropper in the back of the gearbox of 33:30 giving an overall ratio of 3.9 To further complicate the issue some pure 3.9 rear diffs do exist.
Some Jap cars have 4.11 diffs and many have 4.444:1
With .738 5th gear and 4.444 diffs the mph/1000rpm is 21.8

Thanks Harvey
Having a WRX box and rear diff fitted this week. Will post further comment on ratios when I get to drive my car again. Should be 4.11 or 4.44:1 final drive so lower than UK ratios anyway. Should give approx. 21.8mph/1000rpm in 5th for 4.44:1 as apposed to UK 24.88mph/1000rpm in 5th with 4.11:1 sitting somewhere in between.

Just make sure that the gearbox, and rear diff' are definately matched.
I've heard some real horror stories, about some Subaru "specialists" mixing the final drive ratio's up. This will end up destroying the centre diff', screwing up the handling, and some pretty dodgy tyre wear.
Mark.
