Strengthened Gearsets:
#1
Is anyone running their gearbox with a strengthened gearset or even dog gears?? Would like to know the difference in strengths.
Am considering a set of these gears as am approaching 400bhp and think the standard box won't like that too much....

There is a synchro set that is supposedly capable of well over 400bhp being tested at the moment - not too expensive either.
It will certainly cope with 400bhp - indeed I think the company will happily guarantee it.

Andy,
no secret - I just don't want to speak out of turn on someone else's behalf - especially as I didn't know what he wanted to do about distribution outside of the UK.
The gear box is made outside of the UK and is currently being tested in Mark Aigin's car and for the UK Mark will be dealing with this once he is both happy with it in his car (looking good to date - he used it to get a fairly relaxed 13.45s 500m at Elvington and coming 13th overall ) and has found someone he can trust to build them properly as the build will be crucial to longevity.
The set is a synchro set with helical gears - very nice to use and not horrible like a dog box.

Would this set work in a UK gearbox? Although judging by the way Andy F passed me maybe I need shorter ratios Andy's car passed me at the sort of rate that my car would pass a standard UK on the straights. With only 1 PSI extra boost. Leaner and more advanced with better breathing too, and a rather crisp change by the driver
Thanks Trout for your maps - food for thought

Maybe Andy came out of the corner quicker to start with, plus he has about 80kg less lard, and more power if his RR and AP22 figures are even remotely accurate.

John,
yes the casing is the same - the ratios can be set up to your needs within reason. The gearset uses your own 5th gear as this one is hard to break!
Drop me an email to let me know what you thought of the maps. Once I get my new turbo working I will let you have that map!

Thanks for that Trout I look forward to updates
Pavlo - I had a passenger, John didn't - that should balance the weight ! We were coming out of a 35 mph hairpin, I was in 3rd John was in 2nd and initially pulled a car length on me.

well, sounds like john needs a nice fat torque curve to make the most of the gears. Maybe those sti pistons would do the trick, let you rev to 8000 and hold the gears a while longer.
but Andy, you did dyno at some silly power and torque, and that was before some of the best mods!

I use the car as a daily driver and the need for reliability and the inability to rebuild my own engine (which I expect Andy would undertake himself if necessary) holds me back from running anywhere near as lean or as advanced as Andy, and certainly not as much boost although Andy has tamed things a bit recently after a compressor wheel problem. I will get the cooling sorted and see how we go from there. I am not going to say never, but the plan is stick to the standard clutch and g/box until/unless it breaks, but I am very gentle with it. Andy will always win - combination of car and driver is awesome. Even Sam who is a much better driver than me and throws silly cash at his cars will never win either.

Mmm, that's a good point ! I suppose if it's re-mappable then I may be able to fit a bigger MAF from something else ? or two small ones in parallel like the skylines ? Or maybe just fit a V8 twin turbo chevy motor

Just use a robust, but bigger MAF - should then as you say be able to scale it how you want. Some sensors like on the Evos I gather output a pulse train, the Scooby one is a 5V sensor with steady output at continuous airflow. Your intake is all custom anyway, sure the mechanics of it would be simple for a skilled chap like you If the guys find the MAF scaling map and load headings for the fuel and timing tables you'll be sorted.

dont know what experiences you expect mark to comment on.
The box is in and seems to work fine.
It has been used in cars doing sub 11 second quarters yet day to day feels no different from any other synchroed gearbox I have driven.
I am sure once mark can verify he is happy with it details will be revealed. All I know is it is a great convenient and cheap alternative to a dog box.
