Anti Lag.. bang -bang!!
this burn process as pavlo puts it, is fast travelling hot gas, as it has just expanded/exploded [1]and has to go somewhere, out the exhaust in a bang is where
but on it's way it wen't past the turbo impeller blades, making it spin, this spinning enables the turbo to create boost the instant the throttle is re-applied
[1]= don't shoot me for using the word explode I know fuel doesn't do that (when tuned right anyway) it's just for expression and imagination

I have a good article from an ages old CCC mag explaining all about it, with pretty pictures too. Only problem is it is based on Cossies!
Roughly - with anti lag, throttle closed, engine lets in air (can be through idle air valve) Ignition is retarded - typically 30º. Fuel is injected and mixture ignites. As the ignition is so late, you get sod all power produced (and the "bang bang"). However, there's still plenty of gas coming out to keep the turbo spinning.
Hope that makes sense, can send more words from the article if you want more info.
