Driving with blown turbo
#1
Does anyone know if it is possible to drive a Subaru Sti IV Type R with a blown turbo?
The turbo is not smoking so I think the seals are ok but it is howling whcih I have been told indicates that the compressor wheel has let go. I plan to take the car down to Scoobysport which is about a 60 mile trip. Does anyone know of a safe way to deactivate the turbo so that I can drive the car there to be fixed. I have been told that you can simply disengage the actuator which will stop the turbo spinning up and allow you to drive the car like a normal 2 litre. Is this accurate or is there anything else I need to do\look out for to avoid doing serious damage to the engine.

The exhaust gases still have to pass the turbo.... you have to think what if a bit of the turbo impellor shears off and gets into the engine.... could be very damaging.... And considering you have a STI i would not risk it.... very expensive to fix....
Just my 2p worth....You may get a more technical answer off someone as to how it wont work..

Umit,
Dan is right, about the turbo spooling. It spools at idle, just slower.
I'm afraid there is no easy solution, and if the turbo compressor has let go, continuing to drive the car, will risk bits of blade finding their way to the engine.
I would advise getting the car towed, or finding someone who can change it at your home.
