Question

Hi all,
just checked the gearbox oil on my 1999 uk turbo, its almost empty!!!
Does anyone know what oil to put in it because it doesnt say in the book.
It does say dont mix them, so i would really need to know what subaru main dealers use as it was serviced two months ago.
Im also asking myself why is it that low, it doesnt leak, maybe they forgot to do it!! Too busy working out my £445 bill i guess.
Cheers all
Justin

My books says something like...

API classification GL-5

SAE viscosity No.:
0°C upwards - 90
-30°C upwards - 85W
30°C downwards - 80W
The whole temp range - 75W/90

Or a little hose like what you use for the windscreen washer.

Advise just use Subaru's finest, the box needs semi-synth oil to enable the syncros to bite properly, fully synth usually makes it knotchy.

Thumbs up

Castrol Syntrax is a good one to go for, apparently it's designed for japenese transmissions (that's what it says on the container )

My legacy owners manual says use a GLI 4 spec oil. I did try a fully synth, castrol TAS ( i think thats wot it was called ) and it was CRAP. Put Castrol SMX semi synth in it, and all the crunching was gone. People say the same about sytrax.

You've got to ask yourself "Where did it go" There really is nowhere for the oil to go other than out or into the clutch housing? I've found the dipstick reading is very level sensitive on the gearbox, level ground is essential. I would suggest you drain what's left and re-fill with Castrol Syntrax. It's an easy job, you don't have to remove the undertray.
