Is there any difference between the current WRX and the Phase 2 / 99MY engine other than the ECU ?

From what I've seen the following is different

1. Better induction path
2. Intercooler looks larger but that may have been an optical illusion.
3. All the piping looks smoother with less pressure drop causing sharp bends.
4. The exhaust has a lot more restriction due to 3 cats.

I've donned my flame suit and my wrongs are prepared to be righted (if that makes sense!!)

The intercooler is bigger, about 20% larger i think, dunno about the hoses thou or the induction, saying that it doesnt seem to have improved the performance has it?
Otherwise, the engine is the same as MY99 onwards

Good
So spares / tuning aren't going to be a problem for years to come on a 99MY if I keep it until it dies ?!

I'd heard the new engine was cleaner than the one fitted to the old shape cars, hence the ability to sell the WRX in the States. Maybe the revised pipework has reduced losses in the system, but the new ECU trades power for reduced emissions?

Wink

The engine itself is the same, the ecu is slightly different but you would be able to swap one engine from this car into another car that had a Phase 2 engine and not notice the difference (and the 2 cats the MY00/99's had over the 3 that the post MY01's have)
