IM looking into buying a re-programmable ECU like the Motec, link, unichip e.t.c. Just wondering if anyone knows which is the best, has anyone had any experiences of them. Cheers.

Best is a very subjective term and also depends on what you want it for. If you post up your car, the spec, budget etc. there are a few experienced hands on here who can probably point you in the right direction.

Thanks Matt. My '96 Sti has a hks filter, forge DV, with a full decat system so its running at about 320bhp. I want a reprogrammable chip in view of upping my boost greater than 1 bar and squeezing a bit more torque through the lower gears. Im quite keen on the Motec and link spending about £1500 getting it installed and setup e.t.c. The Apexi power FC chip looks good aswell. I hate all that advert crap they dish out with pretty graphs e.t.c. so just wondering who had first hnd experience of these and any probs encountered. Thanks for your help.

I would be surprised if you get a Motec for £1500, you should be able to get a link for around that price.

Not wanting to upset that kart, but what makes yuo think that you have 320BHP from just an air filter and an exhaust on an STi 2. I must get on those rollers.

People seem to also be very happy with the TEK 2 system, setup by Power Engineering.

My choice would still have to be the link.

Shorla,I ran a Link on my STi4 for a year and was very happy indeed with it.You w'ont get a Motec fitted and mapped for 1500 quid.Link will cost around 1300.Must agree with Danny though,d'ont assume you-ve got 320 BHP

had a LINK fitted on a '94 WRX about 8 months ago and it seems to do what is meant after having the car tuned on a rolling road.

Boost has gone from 0.7 bar to 1.2 bar (?that's 10 psi to 17psi approx)

The key to getting best performance was getting someone expert to do the tuning; the tuning by the garage that fitted the LINK (on road tuning, not rolling road) ended up with a really bad power blip at 4600 rpm.

Tuned expertly on a rolling road gave a real smooth power curve and increased power (from previous tune) by about 15%.

Drove like a different vehicle .....

And of course, when I sell the car I can re-fit the original ECU and put the LINK in my next vehicle ....

you can also get the gems ecu, as used by most group N subarus and the WRC car if remember correctly.


1500£ mapped and fitted, comes with ALS as standard if you are interested in that.

not sure about the scoob, but it also have a two sided eprom version which means that you can run two maps by just flicking a switch. i am getting mine fitted thursday, with a optimax map and optimax and millers CVL map for track days.

Sounds great Sam - how long has it been available for the Evo? Will you be able to tweak it yourself or is it a back to dealer thing?

it is a fully programmable ecu. you can go to gems website and download the software, very nice.


you can tweak it yourself with the aid of a dongle( why the hell do they call that? ) and a laptop.


all the usuall bells and whistles of the motec. used in most grpN subarus and evos
it has been available for the evo6 for a long time. but for the evo 7 will see soon . the rally version for the 7 has been around for a while but it has been modified to control the isc and the ac for the road version.

i forgot to mention i was running 1 bar boost, was gonna say but didn't realise my 320 comment was gonna get such a battering :] Asking around it seems the Link chip is a very good option for the money i also get the idea that to a certain extent a chip is a chip around this price range. What everyone else think-much difference between chips??. How does it work when you re-programme it?? can you for example squeeze more torque through the lower gears and in turn loose out at the top end?? When re-programming it yourself are the options you can choose limited o can you effectively change your entire car?? Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

i decided on the gems, ive had it just over a month now
main reason i picked it was because you can run 2 maps,
ive got one set to UL and other to optimax + NF
im running 1.3 bar upto 5800rpm then drops to 1.1 bar
car drives so much smoother now,
you can get moro info on the gems from scoobymania
its just over £1500 for the ecu and mapping

switching beetween eprom's is easy to do... you can almost sit them on top of each other apart from a few pins! dont ask what Im planning though
