Default Is it worth replacing my 1999 WRX gearbox with 5-speed manual from 1996 STI

Hello everyone,

I am having an offer of 280$ for the mentioned 5-speed 1996 STI gearbox and I need you advice if it is worth replacing my 1999 WRX with it. My car is currently having an upgraded turbo and Exedy blue box clutch with lighter flywheel prepared for mounting, so in the meantime I can replace the gearbox.

I am looking forward to your replies, let me know if you guys have any questions.

Kind regards,
Deni

If nothing is wrong with your box then no, not worth swapping.

Your box is a later 754 box and considered stronger than the earlier 752 boxes.

Why are you wanting to swap ?

Hello Mat,

The main reason is, because I want to make the car reliable as much as I can while waiting for opportunity to buy a 6 speed transmission. Also due to the COVID-19 I expect very soon for a complete lock-down and at this moment I do not want to "waste" all of my money for 6 speed gearbox.
The other question I have is, does the transmission from 2012 STI will fit the GC8, the mounts are the same, the clutch needs to be changed with an STI one, the rear diff and driveshaft also. The main question is, do we need the same parts like for a Newage STI to GC8 WRX swap, or there is a difference somewhere.

The truth is that it is not worth replacing the TY54 by the TY52, for what they mentioned before and it is so. The ty54 has some durability improvements. The STI box that they offer you is known as 9R. that what you have is a shorter differential ratio. 4.111 vs 4.444 does not have a great improvement in terms of durability but it is shorter so you can gain bass using the STI 9R ty52.

Keep in mind that if you put the box that you must replace the differential the same. Both things are changed for what I mentioned earlier about the differential relationship that is different. 4.111 is the WRX 99 and 4.444 is the STI 9R. You cannot use the box without its respective differential.

Thank you guys for the answers. We have a lot of parts for Subaru, so the differential is not the problem. With you help we decided to keep using the current transmission and hopefully swap with a 6 speed until the end of the year.
