Default Correct rear diff

I'm collecting bits to do a manual conversion on my legacy. From what I understand the rear diff ratios have to match the front to work. So for example if I got a box from a uk2000 and a diff from some where else how would I know if the rear diff matched my gearbox. Is there serial numbers on the diff or something. Its something I've never looked at

Make sure the final drive matches the diff.
