Default Need help! Brand new to this

I'm new to the forum and owning scoobys. I've done a bit of research but not sure im always looking in the right places.

Yesterday I bought an 02 Impreza WRX. It was dirt cheap and at the minute I'm not looking for more then 300-330 bhp so I didn't see the point in the STI as the prices have soared recently.

I bought the car with a couple of problems. The main one is that it will not go into first gear at all ( no good when the car is running or when its off) but all other gears are fine.

1st question is what could it be? I was told it's likely to be synchromesh. But then also told that 1st doesn't have a synchro that would cause it not to go from a standstill into 1st.

2nd question is that I may end up just changing the gearbox. 5 speeds are pretty cheap and if I could find a decent condition 6 speed. I'd be very tempted. But which 5 speed and 6 speed ones would fit? The code on mine is TY54VN2AA.

Cheers for the help.

AIt will be the gearbox that is at fault. Any newage 01-07 WRX gearbox will fit yours, the later hawkeye 06-07 are the strongest 5 speed boxes.

You don't want to do a 6 speed conversion, all the gear required will probably cost more than you paid for the car, gearbox, cradle, diff, prop, driveshafts, etc.

Thanks for the reply.

Am I likely to have a problem with the diff and drive shafts? Also I've found a cheap low mileage 06 Subaru but this car was a non turbo. This is the gearbox code TY754VT7AA-T6 Is this likely to be the strong 5 speed or am I specifically looking for WRX or JDM WRX STI 5 speed.

No, it won't be the right 5 speed. The hawkeye WRX was stronger, but realistically and newage WRX box will suit you.

JDM will have different ratios but still work.
