Intercoolers & ECU's
#1
Whats the deal with these front mounted intercoolers?
Will they make any difference to the performance of the car if i was to get on fitted.
Also could someone please recommend a good ECU upgrade. Not just after the most power, also want reliability etc.
Cheers

Front mounted intecoolers are really just there to bring down the intake temperature which results in higher boost levels and more advance being used = more power (safely)
As for ECU's you have a large choice depending on what year your car is and how much you want to spend.
For a plug and play option for a MY99 or 00, TEK2 is good. TEK2 is mail order, TEK3 wil give slightly better performance but a trip to PE is needed for setup.
Unichip is for all years, costs about the same same sort of gains, external boost controller and FCD needed unless you get the brand new one which will cost more. Not to sure on the reliablilty of these though, I have never used it.
Motoec, Gems, Link - all replacement ECU's with a price tag starting at £1500. With a good mapper you are taking big gains with retaining the reliablity. I know a MY00 hitting 270bhp and 260 ft/lb using the link (full HKS decat with HKS air filter)
All this is ok but to make the most of of a mappable ECU you need to do the basics first, i.e. air filter, exhaust etc (+ brakes, suspension)
Hope this is of help.
Neil.
