Mine developed exactly the same issue about 3 months after buying it.

On review of the last gearbox oil change in the reciepts, cheap oil had been used.

A little research on here and contact with user Oilman I ordered new oil, costing more per litre than the total cost of what was in the box.

Oil changed and never crunched since, thats nearly 3 years.....

Before she the cost of a box or rebuild, try changing the oil......

Hope that helps

This is the advise from oilman

You need a 75w-90 for the gearbox and diff.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-673-75w-...ion-fluid.aspx

If you want to go for the best, the Millers CRX 75w-90 NT, Gulf Competition, Motul Gear 300, Red Line 75w-90NS and Millers TRX are ideal for the gearbox. The Castrol Universal/Universal Plus, Motul Motylgear and Fuchs Gear Syn are all decent alternatives. The Fuchs Syn 5, Millers CRX, Redline 75w-90 GL5, Motul Gear 300 and Gulf Competition are ideal for the diff. The Fuchs Sintopoid, Castrol Syntrax Longlife, Millers TRX, Motul Motylgear, Mobil SHC and Amsoil FGR are also good choices.

my old bug had a 3-4 crunch as well at high RPM, changing the oil definitely helped it as did adding a bottle of molyslip. Was still a little sound from it when i sold it and it's still going strong.

If i was keeping the car then I would have opted to rebuild the box, a little more cost than a replacement box but at least you know everything is fresh and you wont be stripping it down in a few months if the 2nd hand box develops a fault.

Motul Gear 300, Castrol Universal and Red Line Lightweight shockproof (probably the best proven one to stop crunching, but not cheap) are probably the most popular options for sorting out the crunching. That's a 6 speed box isn't it? They take 4.1L and you can use those oils in the diff too and that takes 0.8L.

Cheers

Thanks for that. In that case it takes 3.5L, s still 5L to do the diff too.

Our data doesn't list how many gears a car has and I can't remember all the different things we deal with off the top of my head.

Cheers

Tim
