Ecu reprogramming

Is the ecutec a replacement ECU for a MY02 WRX or is it a reprogram of the fitted unit. Is it something that the dealer would be able to detect & so make the warrenty invalid. Does it give performance improvements & how much. Any info/experience on new age only
