Gearbox gone bang
95 WRX, all was cool, going up a hill, slowed down in 5th gear as traffic did, as traffic started to move i went to 4th, then 3rd and accelerated and kaboom, cadung cadung cadung lol, knocklink hit the red LED and rattle rattle rattle.
pull over, thought engine went pop but nope, its the gearbox.
1st/2nd are virtually non existant, but will engage when engine cold, no 3rd gear at all, but i do have 4th 5th and reverse.
So, limped home in 4th gear.
theres a rattle at idle but when clutch engaged it stops.
So, as im clutching at straws, anything that can be fixed ? or gearbox out and replace ?
I will do the job myself, easy to do on a driveway or uber hard ?
Not checked its code yet but standard WRX drivetrain.
Cheers for any input.

Sounds like it's new gearbox time. I know that feeling, mine stripped 3rd. Every other gear was fine, but 3rd was like neutral, not even any funny noises, just no drive. Anyway, yeah I changed my box on the drive by myself with just a good trolley jack and a set of ramps. Is pretty straightforward, biggest faff was splitting the ball joints to allow the driveshafts to slide off the gearbox splines.

Cheers bud, yeah, im expecting to replace the box, will remove old one 1st before i purchase another tho to be fully sure, im hoping maybe just the release bearing has bust, the pressure plate has lost some fingers etc, i can but only hope ha ha
Glad its not too bad a job on the driveway, i have most the tools needed etc, axle stands etc , doesnt help my driveway slopes downwards lol.
Cheers

Good luck fella. Mine went exactly the same as ian's. I'm on my 4th week of replacing the gearbox on my mate's driveway, but that's only working a few hours on a Saturday. We've had a few struggles, mainly with seized nuts and terrible weather, but hopefully the new box will be installed tomorrow.
