As above,

my gearbox has the R160 female shafts with the stubs and roll pin inserts.

Is it just a case of remove these inserts and put the male ended r180s into the box?

R160 and R180 refer to the rear diff, not the gearbox.

Yes but I believe the r180 front shafts are male ended not female ended?

I have a uk blob 6sp in my classic and am converting from 5x100 to 5x114. So if I understand correctly I need the shafts for the front and the hubs of a r180 equipped car?

There is no such thing as R180 front shafts.

On cars with a R180 rear diff, of which there are many there are a few variations of front shaft.

If you're changing to 114mm hubs, then you will need front shafts from that same vehicle, there is no question about that.

Your earlier 6 speed at best will have different oil seals, and the 114mm front shafts may fit after this.
Not 100% sure as there are a couple of variations of front diff seal on the 6 speeds. It should be a seal change, but I'm sure I've come across some where the outer plates on the diff are different so it's more than a seal swap.

But I'm 99.9% you cannot use any 5x100 shafts at the front whether they were fitted to a car with an R180 rear or not.

Earlier 6 speeds had female sockets in the diff as did the shafts and there was a male-male stub that went into the box, same as the auto boxes.

Later 6 speed shafts were male ended and yes sometimes these are a straight swap into teh box ( noting oil seal differences ).

But the 114mm outer spline/setup is different so any of the 110mm shafts will not fit anyway.

Unless you're running huge slicks and track racing, there really is little need to change to the larger hubs anyway.

Got it in one, 520hp low boost with 245/40/17 slicks and launch control

Friends car has more, probably heavier and same...still on 110mm hubs with no issues, albeit uprated parts from DSS.

We've a hillclimb Impreza running about the same as you 550hp or so, Avon slicks. It has broken a couple of shafts and after 4 years of competition a wheel bearing did fail last year...think those hubs/bearings had well over 100k on them
It breaks 6 speed gearboxes more often though.

IMO your easiest upgrade is simply fit uprated shafts only, as regular 6 speed CV joints are very strong anyway, the weaker link being the shafts ( and the box itself at that level which will always be on borrowed time )

By all means move to the 114mm setup, but it will cost more and ultimately you're still using standard parts. You'll need all shafts, hubs, brakes, wheels, I think suspension uprights are a different diameter too so you may need suspension too.

Aye, the front hubs can be machined to suit the classic suspension so that isnt so much of an issue.

I would also need the rear diff.

My brakes can be drilled to suit for no cost, so I need hubs, shafts, and rear diff.

Wheels are already 5x114, I didnt want to use spacers/adapters as they are a bit shonkey!
