Verification of model type from VIN numbers

Is anyone cool enough to have a lookup table for Model against VIN/Chassis number for Imprezza Turbo WRX Type Ra?
In the mini fraternity it is common practice to check numbers against these to verify your 1995 Cooper 1.3 is really one of these and not a rebadged 1.0 litre

I've just been speaking to a very friendly chap by the name of James at Park lane in Alton who can check a cars model / type by the 'model applied number'
but he was not that willing to divulge the details.
anyone else know how to do this ?
(before i end up buying a rebuilt wreck from a very dubious dealer in dorking).
