Default Laptop computer, help wanted please

My youngest daughter has a problem with her laptop, when switched on a message stating starting windows appears but after a short space of time the screen goes dark and nothing else happens. Any ideas or advice please ?

keep pressing f8 - should bring up a menu. select start windows in safe mode. uninstall any recently installed software, start a full scan using whatever anti-virus product is on there.

Shut the machine down and hopefully you should be able to get it started.

May be quicker to restore the OS build, or clean install from removable media.

do above but press "last known good configuration that worked" this reverts to settings that were hopefully good before the problem occured. if that works do virus scan etc as advised from last poster. if there have been any new programs installed recently they might be causing a conflict and need removed.

Thank you for your help mate, I passed on the information but a friend of my daughter's partner had already taken it apart and it was full of dust etc, he got it going again but for some reason there's no sound from it now.

make sure he plugged the speakers back up lol. most things are push fit connectors so he probably disconnected the speakers.
