I'm trying to merge my contacts from my Google, Google +, WhatsApp, Facebook etc but I can't seem to find out where or how to do this.

This was a piece of cake on my S4 but not on the Nexus 5, it's either missing or well hidden.

Open a contact you want to join with something else. Click the little pen symbol to edit it. Click the 3 dots for the menu and choose 'join'

Thanks for that, it's not obvious but at least I know where it is now.

I've now got to merge them all.

Is the nexus 5 same as nexus 7.

Well the 7 is the tablet running Android Jelly Bean, the 5 is the phone running Android Kit Kat.
