OSX 10.8 - No more updates!
"...with Mavericks offered as a free update, will Apple feel any duty to issue security updates for the earlier version of the operating system?
Right now, the signs aren’t looking good. No security updates are showing up in Software Update, or on Apple’s website, for those sticking for a while with Mountain Lion..."
Looks like Apple is to abandon it's Mountain Lion users, in a little over a year since its release too. That's nice!

Although in fairness, if they offer a free upgrade to the new OS why bother supporting the older one, makes sense to me, microsoft does it all the time with older OS's.

You're a sucker. Firstly show me the quote from Apple. I posted a similar thread about a year old HTC phone, it included a quote from HTC.
Secondly, there is an update, and guess what, it's not just a bug fix it's full of fantastic new features, features you'd pay hundreds of pounds for on Windows, unbelievably it's free!

I'm quoting your industry expert friend, are you saying he's wrong? Is it an update or an upgrade for Mountain Lion? MS do free updates for Windows too.
In the meantime, Apple have published a long list of security flaws that exist in the previous version of OSX that is fixed by Mavericks. The should be nice reading for hackers, not nice for those not upgrading who face the prospect of an unpatched OS with more holes than Swiss cheese.

Yes really. The Mini comes with nothing, you'd need a keyboard, mouse and display, which when going by Apple store prices makes it nearly £1500 for a basic 2.3ghz i5 dual core with 4gb ram and 500gb storage. That's pretty poor spec given the price.

You could spend £700, but you could also get a laptop with Win8 pre-installed for under £270 from PCWorld, plus you'll get free updates for Win8 and also a free upgrade to Win8.1.

Also, Apple give free updates and you get a free upgrade from 10.8 to 10.9 (or mountain lion to mavericks if you prefer). So tbh i'm not entirely sure what you're on

We'll you can get it a lot cheaper by not buying a new monitor by apple or using your old one.
So for about £800 you could get a compete Mac mini setup

Take off another £100 for the mouse and keyboard, you can get a standard PC one in the pound shop.

My point is you can be up and running from scratch with a brand new PC surfing the web, emailing, playing games, do your university thesis etc and have access to the widest range of software available for a massively smaller outlay that you can with a new Mac. OSX is already priced into Apple's device much like Windows PCs and the 'free' upgrade (though it's not been confirmed by Apple that they will continue with the 'free' upgrades in the future) is not that free when the cost of previous upgrades were insignificant to the overall total cost of ownership. The savings had from a Windows PC can pay for many upgrades or even a brand new PC in a few years time and still leave you with cash to spare. Getting a free OS upgrade is not going to persuade me to buy a Mac and I very much doubt it will for the vast majority of people looking to buy a PC.
