Just downloaded DC - what the hell is going on - doesnt make sense at all.

Other users set up hubs, you choose which hub to connect to and then all the other users on that hub can access your shared files, same as you can access theirs.

I tried it but you have to be sharing tens of gigs to cnnect to anything decent??

 

Cheers Dave, but how do you view the files they have? I have gone into the "Newbies come in" hub, then have a list of users to the right. When I right click and go to "Browse users files" it just puts them in a queue.

So how can I view files?

you wait for the file to download and the list pops up on your screen.

Or you can search if you are looking for something in particular.

The user you are downloading from must have free "slots" open - even to browse their files.

Find someone with free slots and download away

 

I'm sharing about 40Gb of data and using a Cable Modem, but even I get kicked out of hubs. Basically my routine is this . . .

Refresh the hub list
Sort by number of users
Ignore what they are called, doesn't really matter
Start at the top and work your way down trying to connect
Get onto a hub with lots of users and plenty TB's of data shared
Do a search
Find someone with free slots and a good ping
Download said file

If download is slow I disconnect and resume from someone else to get the best possible speeds.

You can "find alternatives" using the queue bit at the bottom. I keep tring sources until I find a good 30k+ per second.

Tend to flit about on loads of hubs just trying to find what I'm after. Have to say I've had loads of sucess finding stuff on there Got all the Friends episodes from ths US for my GF the other day

 

May be wise to wait til my ADSL connection is up and running - 6 days to go!!!

Definately - 56k/ISDN modems are highly frowned upon on there

Most hubs won't even let you connect if you have a modem, sometimes even a cable one !

Defnately use the search function - it saves loads of time working out who has got slots free. Once you're downloading something you can right click on the download and view the users files. This then lets you browse through whatever directories they are sharing.

You can also download entire directories by selecting the directory and clicking on the download button.

If someone leaves a hub, your download should continue, but if they close DC then it will stop, so expect to lose a few downloads part way through

 

Do a search for dev-gt3p.bin and dev-gt3a.bin (Or similar) Its very popular at the moment

Hooray - finally worked out how to use it, and found a hub where my "measly" 600mb is allowed.

All I can say is "OH MY GOD" - what a myriad of useful information and downloads

An easy way to "double" the size of your shared files is when choosing what folders to share, choose the "network neighbourhood" folder tree and duplicate the folders you're already sharing in there.

 

But if you do fake your share size and get reported to an Op you will most likely get kicked - better to stick on a hob that doesn't mind and build up slowly. You also find people who share their entire C:\ drive including all the installed programs - some hubs mind and others don't. Similarly with DVD's, some hubs ban .VOB files, others don't (each DVD is something like 4gig).

Obviously you should only use DC to exchange non copyright stuff

Nice topic, just got my ADSL up and running. Let's say I wanted to find a certain demo, and I knew the name of it, is there a way to search all hubs for that demo by name, then connect to the hubs that have it until I find one with a free slot and then download?

How do I list what I've got at my end, is that done automatically?

DC++ lets you connect to mulitple hubs Although its not liked by many hub owners and they'll generally kick you for it.

Do a search in google if you fancy trying it
