Question

I am wanting to get some software so that i can control my pc @ home (connected via adsl), from my laptop @ work which accesses the internet through firewalls.

I had a look @ vnc and that does not seem to be able to go through a firewall for the viewer.

I am also thinking of pc anywhere, but aint had chance to play with it yet.

Any idea's?

Cheers

Dan

I use pcAnywhere to control my work PC from home. Although I have ADSL at both ends it's quite slow, but I can do everything I need to with it. Mine is done via Novell VPN, so for the moment the only drawback is that I can't run XP at home as Novell won't work with it yet (or so I'm told).

Hi Dan,

Have a look at this site:
http://www.richmondsys.co.uk/richmond-netop/

You can download a 30day trial, fully working version of this software.

I think this is what you are looking for.

Cheers,

Rob

Alistair,

A 1x Guest 1x Host starter pack is about £130.00 from memory.

Cheers,

Be sure that the software will do what you want before you buy it. Depending upon your network configuration it may not be possible...

1xguest & 1xhost - does that mean I'd need to install something at work ?

What I'd really like it to go to a url and access my home desktop. I thought about terminal server, but I was told that unless it uses port 80 I've got no chance.

why not run an ftp server from your home machine !!!
or has the firewall blocked port 21 aswell?

dont know if XP can run iis ???
but if it does & if you have static ip/hostname, you could run a site of your machine and connect to it by using the hostname assigned by your isp
you can call the website (on your home machine) whatever you like and create a host header that will pick it up

At work we use a CITRIX box, which is the REAL way of working from home. Unfortunately it costs heaps......

Thumbs up

For free - use Netmeeting built into Internet Explorer, try File->New->Internet Call then look at desktop sharing... use it all the time here.

Simon.
