Any web designers who use Wordpress?
We recently took ownership of our new website which has been developed with WordPress Pro and in my opinion its crap and dull. All I hear from our web developer is 'oh it cant do that' 'that's a long term development issue' and so on.
The latest being that any event we add, is automatically listed by the date we add it, rather than in order they are taking place - wtf? Oh and changing it is a 'long term development issue' quel surprise Frankly I've built better sites using Googlesites and Yola -both free.
So, not being much of a techie, I tried to find websites created by Wordpress to see what its capable of but not had much luck. Can anyone suggest any?

Just install a plugin. It really is as simple as that.
I built www.rvtg.org.uk which has an event calender. It took less than two minutes to install and configure.
Either your developer is clueless, or he is trying to drag it out so he still has a job.

Wordpress is a blogging tool at its heart, doing anything outside of its original purpose becomes fiddly but is possible. There are loads of plugins to add functionality, but finding one that does exactly what you want and is written properly (lots aren't) is the trick. It sounds to me like your developer can't be bothered, tbh 'a long term development issue' is a meaningless phrase designed to put you off.
As an ultimate solution I'd suggest getting a site built without the use of a framework like Wordpress - get them to write the code around what you want the site to do, not build the site based on what their framework is able to do - ie, get them to do it properly

I use http://tri.be/wordpress-events-calendar/ on my site (currently offline) it's easy to use and if you get the Pro version they offer pretty good support.

We specialise in WordPress hosting over at freshsites.co.uk, and also do a lot of WordPress design/dev through our sister company at nWebDesign.co.uk.. Wordpress has certainly come a long way and is far from just a blogging platform these days

I'm a web designer and use Wordpress for the majority of our websites. It's a very basic but well crafted content management system as standard but can be expanded easily and very cheaply to be perfect for what you need.
A good example is my own site http://ibiza2013.net - it's primarily an event-based website and as such it's important to have a well implemented calendar, which it does .
I could have a look at what plugin you're using, as I've tested most of them on the market!

Got to agree with the guys here saying Word Press has moved on from a blogging tool. It's a lot more of a content management system these days and has plugins aplenty. I have used it a little, but am far from an expert in it. I beleive the biggest issue is choosing which plugins are right for you.
To the OP - those sound like the sort of answers someone with a limited knowledge of Word Press would give - find someone else

Wordpress is a fantastic platform that can be made to do pretty much anything you want. Great to develop for and great for the end user to work with.
I've been building sites since 1998 and now find myself using Wordpress for prettymuch everything barring ecommerce sites (not long before we use it for that too) it really is an awesome platform.
Cheers

I missed the 'Wordpress Pro' comment before - Would that be a paid account on WordPress.com by any chance? If that's the case I can understand why your developer is having difficulty doing what you're asking!
